Survey

The Survey tool is very useful for getting feedback about your course.  This information can be used to help improve your course.

Creating New Survey

To create a  Survey follow the steps below:

  1. Click the Survey link located in the course navigation bar.
  2. Click the New Survey icon to create a new survey. (See Figure 1) You are brought to a screen with four tabs:  Properties, Restrictions, Reports and Layout/Questions. (See Figure 2)

  1. Properties
    1. Enter a name for the survey in the Name field.
    2. Check the box beside Feedback if you would like to give immediate feedback for the questions.
    3. Type a general description of the survey in the Description text box.  This will be displayed at the beginning of the survey.
    4. Type a message in the Footer Message text box. This will be displayed at the end of the survey.
    5. Type a message in the Submission Message box.  This will be displayed after the survey has been submitted.
      Note: You can do a spell check on your messages by clicking on the button .

  2. Restrictions
    1. Click the Restrictions tab.
    2. Set the Status of the Survey.  Select Active to make the survey available to students.
    3. Enter a Start Date and End Date for the Survey.  The survey will only be available between these dates.  If no start date or end date is specified the survey will always be available.
    4. Choose the Response Type for the survey, according to your preference.  To limit the number of survey responses that users can submit, select Limited to and enter the number of responses you want to allow.  To allow students to edit their survey responses after they are submitted select the Editable option.  To allow unlimited survey responses select the Unlimited option.

  3. Reports
    1. Click the Reports tab.
    2. Click the Add Report button if you want to create a report. It allows you to create a report on the basis of the data obtained or on individual attempt basis.
    3. Choose the appropriate date of release of the report under Release and select the desired persons the report should be submitted to under Release Report To.

  4. Layout/Questions
    1. Click the Layout/Questions tab.
    2. Click the Add/Edit Questions button.
    3. If you have not created questions in the question library refer to the  Question Library and Question Type sections of this tutorial for instruction on how to create questions.
      Note: the Question Library in the D2L Survey area is separate from the Question Library in the  Quizzes area. Questions created in the quiz area are not available in the Survey area.
    4. If you have already created questions in the question library and would like to use them in this survey, click the Import icon.
    5. Choose the appropriate Source Collection and Source Section.  The Source Collection is either the Question Library, or a previously created survey.  The Source Section is the section folder within the Collection, where the desired questions are located.  Choose Collection Root to see all sections and question within the Collection you have chosen.  Choose a particular Section to see only the questions in that section.
    6. Check the questions that you want to import for the Survey.
    7. Click the Save Button.
    8. Click the Back to Survey Layout/Questions link.
  5. Click the Preview Survey icon to see your survey in final form.
  6. Click the Save Survey button if you are satisfied with the results.
Survey List

You may view the list of surveys by simply clicking on the Survey List icon.  This will display all active and inactive surveys. Clicking a survey name will take you to the Manage Survey screen discussed earlier.

 

Copy Survey

If you desire to copy a survey, click on Copy Survey. Select the survey to copy,  give a new name to the new survey and then select the status of the new survey. After done, click on Create Copy.

Reorder Surveys

If you want to change the display order of the current Survey List , click the Reorder Survey icon.  Select the Survey you want to move and use the  Up and Down arrows to order the surveys.  Click the Save button.

Delete Surveys

If you want to delete a Survey, click the Delete Surveys icon.  Place a check next to the surveys you want to delete and click the Delete Selected button. Click OK on the alert window to confirm.
