Question Types

You can create Question for the quiz by following one of the two methods below:

  1. Selecting the Layout/Questions tab inside the quiz and click Add/Edit Questions
  2. Selecting the Question Library icon on the quizzing homepage

You may then select the type of question you want to create by selecting from the Create New dropdown menu.

Example: Multiple Choice Question

Multiple Choice Question (MC)
  1. Select Multiple Choice Question (MC) from the dropdown menu. Click the Go button
  2. Enter a question Title (optional).
  3. Enter a value for the question in the Points box.
  4. Assign a Difficulty level ranging between 1 and 5.
  5. Type your question in the Question text box.  To use HTML check the box labeled Use HTML, then either enter the HTML code directly into the Question Text box, or use the HTML editor provided in D2L.
  6. To upload an image related to the question, click the Find link to retrieve the image from your course, or click the Browse button to upload from your hard drive.
  7. Choose the type of Enumeration from the drop down list according to your numbering system preference.
  8. Choose an appropriate Enumeration Style.
  9. If you wish to have the answers appear in random order, check the box beside Randomize options.
  10. Type in your answer choices in each of the option text boxes.  Set the Weight option according to your preference.
  11. If you want to add more than four options,  enter the number of options you would like to add in the box labeled  Add Option and click the  icon.
  12. If you want to remove an unused option then click icon next to that option.
  13. If you want students to receive feedback after choosing an option you may do so by clicking the Add Feedback icon.
  14. Once you are finished with the question click the Preview button to see your question in final form.
  15. Click the Save button or the Save & New button to save your changes and optionally create a new question.

 

True or False Question (T/F)
  1. Select the True or False Question (T/F) from the dropdown menu. Click the Go button
  2. Type the question Title (optional).
  3. Type a value in the Points box and assign a Difficulty level ranging between 1 and 5.
  4. Type your question in the Question Text box. To use HTML check the box labeled Use HTML, then either enter the HTML directly into the Question Text box, or use the HTML editor provided in D2L.
  5. To upload an image related to the question, click the Find link to retrieve the image from your course, or click the Browse button to upload from your hard drive.
  6. Choose an Enumeration option according to your choice of numbering system.
  7. Choose an appropriate Enumeration Style.
  8. Set the weight for the correct answer (True or False) to 100%.
  9. If you want students to receive feedback after choosing an option, you may do so by clicking the Add Feedback icon.
  10. Once you are finished with the question click the Preview button to see your question in final form.
  11. Click the Save button or the Save & New button to save your question and optionally create a new question.
Long Answer Question (LA)
  1. Select Long Answer Question (LA) from the dropdown menu. Click the Go button
  2. Type the question Title (optional).
  3. Type a value in the Points box. Assign a Difficulty level ranging between 1 and 5.
  4. Type your question in the Question Text box. To use HTML check the box labeled Use HTML, then either enter the HTML directly into the Question Text box, or use the HTML editor provided in D2L.
  5. To upload an image related to the question, click the Find link to retrieve the image from your course, or click the Browse button to upload from your hard drive.
  6. Enter the number of rows and columns beside input box to specify the size of the answer box for students.
  7. You may type initial text and answer key (optional).
  8. Once you are done with the question click the Preview button to see your question in final form.
  9. Click the Save button or the Save & New button to save your question and optionally create a new question.
Short Answer Question (SA)
  1. Select Short Answer Question (SA) from the dropdown menu. Click the Go button
  2. Type the question Title (optional).
  3. Type a value in the Points box and assign a Difficulty level ranging between 1 and 5.
  4. Type your question in the Question Text box. To use HTML check the box labeled Use HTML, then either enter the HTML directly into the Question Text box, or use the HTML editor provided in D2L.
  5. Enter the number of rows and columns beside input box to specify the size of answer box for students.
  6. Type your answers in each of the text boxes and set the weight option according to your preference. You may add more answers by clicking the icon or remove an answer by clicking the icon.
  7. To upload an image related to the question, click the Find link to retrieve the image from your course, or click the Browse button to upload from your hard drive.
  8. Once you are done with the question click the Preview button to see your question in final form.
  9. Click the Save button or the Save & New button to save your question and optionally create a new question.
Arithmetic Question(2+2)

Arithmetic Questions are a great way to present each students with different questions for a given quiz.  Numbers are randomly generated for each question by picking a range of numbers for a variable and deciding how much to increment the variable.

  1. Select Arithmetic Question (2+2) from the dropdown menu. Click the Go button
  2. Type the question Title (optional).
  3. Type a value in the Points box, and assign a Difficulty level ranging between 1 and 5.
  4. Type your question in the Question Text box. To use HTML check the box labeled Use HTML, then either enter the HTML directly into the Question Text box, or use the HTML editor provided in D2L.  Use variables inside curly braces { } instead of numbers.  Example:  if you want a question like Add 5 and 6 and you would like different numbers inserted for each student, type Add {x} and {y}
  5. Type the variables used in the question text under Variables.   Then specify the minimum and maximum numbers, decimal places and number of steps to increment the variables value.  You may add more variables by clicking the icon or remove unwanted variables by clicking the icon.
  6. Enter the formula in the Formula field to calculate the answer.  For example, the formula for the question in step 4 would be ({x}+{y})
  7. Type the answer precision level and the tolerance with appropriate units.
  8. To upload an image related to the question, click the Find link to retrieve the image from your course, or click the Browse button to upload from your hard drive.
  9. Once you are done with the question click the Preview button to see your question in final form.
  10. Click the Save button or the Save & New button to save your question and optionally create a new question.
Fill in the Blanks Question (FIB)

Fill in the Blanks questions allows the user to create the question with text and one or more blank spaces to complete different parts of a sentence.

  1. Select Fill in the Blanks Question (FIB) from the dropdown menu. Click the Go button
  2. Type the question Title (optional).
  3. Type the value in the Points box, and assign a Difficulty level ranging between 1 and 5.
  4. Type your question in the Question Text box. To use HTML check the box labeled Use HTML, then either enter the HTML directly into the Question Text box, or use the HTML editor provided in D2L.
  5. Type the text that should appear before the blank in the Text box.
  6. Select a size for the blank space from the drop down menu labeled Size
  7. Click the Add Answer icon to insert the correct answer for this blank. Type the answer in the Text field.  If you have more than one correct answer you may add another answer by clicking the Add Answer icon again.
  8. If you have more text to add after the blank, then type in another text box after blank. You may also add the blank space by repeating steps 6 and 7.
  9. Remove unused text boxes or blanks by clicking the Remove Text or the Remove Blank icon.
  10. To upload an image related to the question, click the Find link to retrieve the image from your course, or click the Browse button to upload from your hard drive.
  11. Once you are done with the question click the Preview button to see your question in final form.
  12. Click the Save button or the Save & New button to save your question and optionally create a new question.
Multi-Select Question (M-S)
  1. Select Multiple-Select Question (M-S) from the dropdown menu. Click the Go button
  2. Type the question Title (optional).
  3. Type a value in the Points box, and assign a Difficulty level ranging between 1 and 5.
  4. Type your question in the Question Text box. To use HTML check the box labeled Use HTML, then either enter the HTML directly into the Question Text box, or use the HTML editor provided in D2L.
  5. To upload an image related to the question, click the Find link to retrieve the image from your course, or click the Browse button to upload from your hard drive.
  6. Choose an Enumeration option according to your choice of numbering system.
  7. Choose an appropriate Enumeration Style.
  8. Choose one of the Points systems for grading.  Using the All or Nothing option students will only receive credit if they have chosen all the correct answers.  With the Right Minus Wrong option students will receive partial credit for choosing some of the correct answers.
  9. If you wish to have the answers appear in random order, check the box besides Randomize Options.
  10. Type your answer choices in each of the option text boxes.  Check the box labeled Correct for each correct answer.
  11. If you would like to add more options, enter the number of options to add in the Add Option box and click the icon.
  12. If you want to remove unused options click the icon.
  13. If you want students to receive feedback after choosing an option, you may do so by clicking the Add Feedback icon.
  14. Once you are done with the question click the Preview button to see your question in final form.
  15. Click the Save button or the Save & New button to save your question and optionally create a new question.
Matching Question (MAT)
  1. Select Matching Question (MAT) from the dropdown menu. Click the Go button
  2. Type the question Title (optional).
  3. Type a value in the Points box and assign a Difficulty level ranging between 1 and 5.
  4. Type your question in the Question Text box. To use HTML check the box labeled Use HTML, then either enter the HTML directly into the Question Text box, or use the HTML editor provided in D2L.
  5. To upload an image related to the question, click the Find link to retrieve the image from your course, or click the Browse button to upload from your hard drive.
  6. Choose one of the options under Marking for grading purposes.
  7. Type the choices for the question in the Choices text box.  If you would like more than 2 choices, you can add choices by clicking the Add Choice icon.
  8. Add matches in the text box under Matches.  Associate the matches with the choices by assigning a number to each match.  The number should correspond to the numbered text boxes for the choices above. You may add more matches if you need.
  9. Once you are done with the question click the Preview button to see your question in final form.
  10. Click the Save button or the Save & New button to save your question and optionally create a new question.
Ordering Question
  1. Select Ordering Question from the dropdown menu. Click the Go
  2. Type a question Title
  3. Type a value in the Points box and assign a Difficulty level ranging between 1 and 5.
  4. Type your question in the Question Text box. To use HTML check the box labeled Use HTML, then either enter the HTML directly into the Question Text box, or use the HTML editor provided in D2L.
  5. To upload an image related to the question, click the Find link to retrieve the image from your course, or click the Browse button to upload from your hard drive.
  6. Choose the desired Grading method
  7. Enter the Answers in the correct order they are supposed to be in
    Note: The answers will be automatically randomized when taking the test
  8. Click on Add Item to add any additional option
  9. Once you are done with the question click the Preview button to see your question in final form.
  10. Click the Save button or the Save & New button to save your question and optionally create a new question.

Note: You can add Hint or feedback to each of the question by clicking on the respective link at the bottom of the page.

Creating new Text/Image Information

If you just want to add some text or any image as a supplementary information to the quiz.

  1. Select text information (TXT) or Image information (IMG) from the drop down menu and Click Go
  2. Type in a title for the information. This is optional.
  3. For TXT, type in the text information in the Question text box
    For IMG, you can either browse for the file in the course folders by clicking Find or can upload an image file from your computer.
    Type down a caption for the picture under Caption.
  4. Click on Save to save the information or Save & New to save and create a new information.
